TAMU-Health Mapping a Network Drive

Body

Overview

This article will detail how to access a TAMU Health shared network drive on Windows and macOS devices. If you are attempting to connect to a network drive while not on campus, ensure you first connect to the TAMU VPN

NOTE: For first time setup or to gain access to a network drive, contact the Health Technology Care Team. Your supervisor will need to request access on your behalf before a drive can be mapped.

TAMU Health network drives SHOULD NOT be mapped to personal computers or devices that are not controlled, managed, and updated by a Texas A&M University Technology Services group or departmental IT organization (ex: HSC IT). These IT groups are necessary to verify that all required security updates, antivirus, and malware protections are properly maintained on the machines they manage. Mapping a network drive onto a machine not managed by the university exposes these drives, the data on them, and the other users of those drives to unnecessary security risks.

If you need access to a Texas A&M Health network drive from a personal computer or device, use Remote Desktop (RDP) to connect to your on-campus workstation. If you need RDP access, contact the Health Technology Care Team

Windows

NOTE: TAMU Health network drives should map automatically if using a TAMU Health Windows computer. To avoid conflicts with automatic drive mapping, the steps below detail how to create a shortcut to the drive instead.

  1. Right click on your Desktop or in another folder in which you'd like to create a shortcut to the network drive.
  2. Select New.
  3. Select Shortcut.
  4. Type your file path of the network drive provided to you (e.g. \\healthfile.ad.tamhsc.edu\folder).
  5. Click Next
  6. Type a preferred name for the shortcut.
  7. Click Finish

macOS

  1. Open a Finder window by clicking the Finder icon located on the dock.
  2. In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click Go.
  3. Select Connect to Server
  4. Type your file path of the network drive provided to you (e.g. smb://healthfile.ad.tamhsc.edu/folder).
NOTE: Make sure to prefix the provided file path with smb:// if not done so already.
  5. Click Connect
