Overview
The residence halls at Texas A&M are wired with one Ethernet connection per resident. To connect multiple devices to the Internet simultaneously, you can use a wired router. This device will allow you to use a single Internet connection for multiple devices such as gaming consoles and printers.
Texas A&M prohibits students from using the wireless feature on wireless routers. Multiple wireless signals in a residence hall creates interference with the campus wireless, causing disruptions and poor network performance for everyone. Offenders will lose Ethernet connection and may face further disciplinary action.
Instructions for Connecting a Router to ResNet
-
- Plug the power cord into the wall and into the router.
- If your router has been previously used, make sure you reset the device. Refer to your device manual for instructions.
- Before you connect your device, make sure your computer and all other devices are disconnected from the TAMU WiFi wireless connection. You can disconnect your computer by clicking on the wireless icon settings in the lower right hand tool bar and clicking the Disconnect option.
NOTE: For instructions on disconnecting other devices from TAMU WiFi, please visit our documentation titled “TAMU WiFi for Residence Halls”.
- Plug your Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack on your router. This may be labeled as WAN, Modem or Internet. Connect the other end of the cable into your Ethernet port in your dorm room.
- The other numbered jacks on your router are for your computer and other devices you want to connect to the Internet. Plug one end into your router and the other into the device you want to connect to the Internet.
- Open a browser and you should be automatically redirected to http://register.net.tamu.edu, the Network Registration page.
NOTE: The register.net.tamu.edu link will only resolve when connected to ResNet.
- Click Register your Computer.
- Log in with your NetID and your NetID password.
- When told to reboot, first reboot the router, then reboot the computer. Your devices should have access to the Internet now.
- Double check that your router is not emitting a wireless signal. You can check by clicking on the wireless settings icon on your tool bar. If you see a wireless network with your router brand name, your router is emitting signal.
