Overview
These instructions will allow you to set up your Texas A&M University Gmail account on your Microsoft Outlook 2016 mail client using IMAP.
Please note that the Google Apps Sync method does not work for Macintosh.
You may skip to Outlook Setup if IMAP is already turned on in Google Mail.
Gmail Settings Setup
- Set up a Texas A&M Google Apps password if the user has not already done so (more info can be found in KB0010676.)
- Enable access for less secure apps in Google settings:
- Log into the Google account
- Click the account circle in the upper right corner and then click My Account (see below) or visit https://myaccount.google.com
- Click Sign-in & Security
- Scroll down to Allow less secure apps and turn it on.
- Make sure IMAP for the Gmail account is turned on. (Steps taken from https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en)
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- In the top right, click Settings.
- Click Settings.
- Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAPtab.
- In the "IMAP Access" section, select Enable IMAP.
- Click Save Changes.
Outlook Setup
- Open Outlook 2016. If Outlook prompts you to type in your email address, type it in. Otherwise, you may need to go to Outlook > Preferences > Accounts > + (located at the bottom of the accounts list).
- Enter netid@email.tamu.edu as the email, make sure to click on Not Gmail? in the top right corner.
- Click on IMAP/POP.
- Configure the rest of the settings as follows:
Email Address: NetID@email.tamu.edu
Type: IMAP
Incoming Server: imap.gmail.com
Outgoing Server: smtp.gmail.com
Username: NetID@tamu.edu
Password: Client Password for Texas A&M Gmail
Make sure to check "Use SSL" for both incoming and outgoing servers.
Note: Ports should be 993 and 587, respectively.
- Click Add Account.
- Click Done.
