Respondus Lockdown Browser - A VM has been detected

Body

Overview

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a Canvas instance. Respondus can run into issues when attempting to detect third-party software or virtual machines; among these is an error where it states that a virtual machine is running when there is not one. This article contains a handful of solutions for when this occurs.

Possible Solutions

  1. Turning off Anti-Virus programs on the computer.
    • Anti-virus programs like McAfee, Norton Antivirus, and Avast sometimes run small virtual machines to help detect malware trying to enter your computer. Opening these programs and disabling/uninstalling them can fix the issue.
NOTE: We advise installing a scanning Anti-Virus software like Malwarebytes if you choose to do this.

  2. Allowing Respondus through your Firewall.
    • Another solution is to verify that Respondus is allowed through your firewall on Private networks. When installed on some devices, Respondus does not have this set by default. You can change the setting by searching for "Windows Defender Firewall" in your Windows search or going to the Control Panel and selecting the Windows Defender Firewall.

    •  Select Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall in the top left.

    • Find Respondus Lockdown Browser in the list of apps and features and make sure the box is checked for both Public and Private networks. You can change this by clicking on the Change Settings button at the top.

If neither of these solutions resolve the issue, please contact the Office of Academic Innovation for further troubleshooting.
