Google Apps at Texas A&M User Guide

Account Eligibility

All students receive a Google Apps account. Faculty can request an account to collaborate with students. Staff eligibility is determined at the department level. Contact your local IT administrator for questions about staff eligibility.

Requesting a Google Apps Account

Texas A&M faculty and staff* may request Google Apps accounts by visiting Gateway.tamu.edu. To learn how to request an account, visit the Claiming a Texas A&M University Gmail Account page on Help Desk Central. Your email address will be “YourNetID@email.tamu.edu.”

*Staff eligibility is determined by each college/unit. Contact your local IT administrator for questions about staff eligibility.

If you are not eligible for Google Apps and work for Texas A&M, please speak with your supervisor on getting access to Google Apps. If you are a Texas A&M Affiliate needed access to Google Apps, your sponsor or supervisor will need to request access on your behalf. Your sponsor or supervisor may go to complete the NetID Request Form. 

Claiming a TAMU Google App account

NOTE: Students will automatically have Google Apps enabled and will not have the option to disable it. Google Apps is required for all students. Other campus members can opt out of Google Apps at any time.  

1. Go to http://gateway.tamu.edu and click Log in.
     
2. Log in with your NetID and your NetID password.     
    
3. Click on Email Settings and scroll down to Google Apps Account. Click Edit on the left-hand side of the screen. You can enable and disable your Texas A&M Gmail account by toggling the little sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen.
     
4. You will be taken to a confirmation screen notifying you of the changes made to your email settings. You can check your email now by logging into google.tamu.edu with your NetID and respective password.

Through Google Apps, the Texas A&M University community has access to a suite of web-based collaboration tools based on their role as a current employee or student.

Texas A&M Gmail

Texas A&M Gmail is the official email for all Texas A&M University students. University members can request an account to collaborate with students. Staff eligibility is determined at the department level.

Texas A&M Chat

You can use Texas A&M Chat to send a direct message or create a group chat. Chat includes advanced features such as video calling, notification tools, message formatting and threaded spaces. Chats are synced automatically across devices, so you can start a message in Chat on your computer and continue on another device, like your phone.

Texas A&M Calendar

Google Calendar is a time-management web application that allows university members to view and organize your schedule across multiple devices, keep track of your important meetings and events, share your calendar with others and much more.

Texas A&M My Drive / Shared Drive

Google My Drive is a storage service that lets individuals securely store, access and share personal files. All files are deleted when you leave the university, including files that you've shared with others.

Google Shared Drive files belong to the team instead of an individual. Even if members leave, the files stay in the Shared Drive so your team can keep sharing information and work anywhere, from any device. Texas A&M Shared Drives have a 25GB storage limit.

Texas A&M Groups

Texas A&M Groups gives easy access to online discussions through mailing lists or online forms. It is great for use by project teams or groups of student organizations. A group is an online environment where group members can discuss items related to a specific subject. A group can contain multiple topics. Topics are different discussions related to the group's subject. Topics can contain multiple posts. Posts are replies from readers on the topic.

Texas A&M Sites lets you easily create and share web pages, and link them to each other as a website.
