Overview
When requesting Exchange Resources such as new mailboxes, shared mailboxes, or distribution groups, you must include what department the resource should be created under. You can only request resources for departments that you are an Exchange administrator of.
Checking what departments you are an Exchange administrator of
- Go to https://gateway.tamu.edu/exchange/. If you are not an Exchange administrator, you will receive the message that you do not have authorization to view that webpage.
- Look up your own UIN in the search box in the top right.
- You will see a list of the departments you are administrator for in the section labeled Admin For.
These are the departments that you are able to request resources for.
Requesting an Exchange Resource
Provide the following information for each resource you are requesting:
- Alias (This will be the first part of the resource's @tamu.edu email address. Example: project-group-3@tamu.edu)
- Primary SMTP Address (This is the delivery address of the resource. This only needs to be defined if it will be different from the Alias. Example: project-groups-all@boutique.tamu.edu)
- Display (This is the descriptive name of the resource. Example: Project Group 3)
- Department (This is the Exchange Group that the resource needs to be a part of. Example: TAMU - College of Medicine)
With the above information, an Exchange resource will be created with the name Project Group 3 and the email address project-group-3@tamu.edu in the Exchange group TAMU - College of Medicine, assuming this resource was requested by an Exchange administrator for the College of Medicine.
Special Purpose Mailboxes - Additional Requirements
Special purpose mailboxes (SPM) are shared mailboxes created for use by student workers or others who do not have an Exchange mailbox but have a need to conduct business using Exchange. Exchange administrators can create SPMs via the Shared Mailbox Creation tool. Detailed instructions can be found in KB0021244.
