1Password - Employee General Information and Getting Started

Body

Overview

1Password is a password manager designed for use in a team environment. It can create strong passwords and securely store them. 1Password integrates well with nearly every operating system and browser. There are also mobile apps for iOS and Android which integrate with the phone’s browser as well.

To activate your 1Password account for university business, email password-management@tamu.edu. Currently, only certain departments use 1Password. To see if you are eligible, please contact your department's IT support team. Interested departments should contact password-management@tamu.edu for more information.

Getting Started

When setting up your TAMU 1Password account for the first time, initial setup will be completed in a browser and that browser will become your first Trusted Device. However, we recommend setting up an additional device (either the 1Password app on your phone or the desktop application) so that you have two Trusted Devices. Using a web browser as your single trusted device may cause problems with your access to 1Password if you ever need to clear your cookies or cache.

Initial Login

  1. Go to https://tamu.1password.com in your web browser.
  2. Enter your NetID@tamu.edu and click Continue.
  3. Click Sign in with Microsoft. You will be taken to a Texas A&M University login screen.

  4. Enter your NetID@tamu.edu and click Next.

  5. Enter your NetID password and click Sign In.

  6. Authenticate via Duo. Select Yes, this is my device to reduce the number of times you may be asked to authenticate. You will be taken to your TAMU 1Password account.

Adding a trusted device

If you have not already done so, download and install the 1Password app for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, or Linux before proceeding.

  1. Open the 1Password application on your phone, tablet, or desktop computer.
  2. Click on Sign in with SSO.

  3. Enter https://tamu.1password.com as the Sign-in Address.
  4. Enter your NetID@tamu.edu as the Email Address then click Next.

  5. Click Sign in with Microsoft.

  6. Enter your NetID@tamu.edu and click Next.

  7. Enter your NetID password and click Sign In.

  8. You will be asked to enter a verification code from a trusted device.

  9. Go to https://tamu.1password.com in your web browser. You will need to authenticate with your NetID@tamu.edu address and NetID password.
  10. Click Allow to authorize your login to a new device.

  11. Copy the 6-digit code that will be presented.
  12. Enter the 6-digit code in the 1Password app and click Submit. You should be presented a screen indicating that you can now use the 1Password app to display verification codes when setting up 1Password on your other devices or browsers.

Authentication and Trusted Devices

1Password at Texas A&M uses Trusted Devices via Single Sign On for authentication. The first time you sign in to your TAMU 1Password account, the device you log in on (phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) will automatically become a trusted device. When you attempt to log in on a different device, you will need to verify your identity by entering a code given on your previously trusted device. Additional information on trusted devices is available in our knowledge base.

Vaults

1Password stores items (login credentials, secure notes, API credentials, etc.) in Vaults. A Vault is a collection of items accessible only to specific individuals. Each person has a Personal Vault that only they can access (such as your admin account login information). They may additionally have access to a Shared Vault. Shared Vaults are collections of items that need to be shared with a specific set of people who may need access to those items (such as your team's Shared NetID account login information). DO NOT store personal items or credentials (such as your non-work banking login information or your family's Netflix login) in your Texas A&M Personal Vault or Shared Vaults.

Texas A&M administrators CANNOT view specific items in Vaults. They can only see the number of items in a Vault.
