Introduction
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) is a tunneling protocol used to support virtual private networks (VPNs) or as part of the delivery of services by ISPs. It does not provide any encryption or confidentiality by itself, so we use IPSec for encryption. This document will help you set up L2TP for Mac OS X. The following information is needed to connect to Texas A&M University’s VPN:
- Username: Your NetID
- Password: Your NetID password
- Sever Address: connect.tamu.edu
- VPN Type: L2TP over IPSec
- Shared Secret: tamuvpn
Configuring a VPN Connection
- Open your System Preferences and choose Network.
- In the list of network connections on the left, click Add (+).
- Choose VPN as the Interface and use L2TP over IPSec as the VPN Type. You can enter anything you'd like as the Service Name. Click Create.
- Enter the following information
- Server Address: connect.tamu.edu
- Account Name: Your NetID
- Click Authentication Settings.
- For User Authentication, enter Your NetID Password as the Password. For Machine Authentication, enter tamuvpn as the Shared Secret. Click OK.
- Click Advanced.
- Check the box for Send all traffic over VPN connection. Click OK.
- Click Apply, then Connect. In the future, you should only need to click Connect on this screen to start your VPN connection.
Configuring a VPN Connection for MacOS Ventura
1. Open your System Settings and choose Network.
2. Then, click on the three horizontal dots in the bottom right corner, Add VPN Configuration, and L2TP over IPSec.
3. Display name is TAMUVPN, Server Address is connect.tamu.edu, Account Name is the Net ID, Password is the Net ID password, Shared Secret is tamuvpn.
4. Click on options in the menu on the left and enable Send all traffic over VPN connection.
5. Finally, go into Privacy and Security in System Settings and change Allow Accessories to connect to Automatically When Unlocked.
6. Then go to VPN tab, click the toggle to enable it, and then open the DUO app to verify the duo push.
