Proofpoint - Adjusting Spam Filters

Body

Overview

You are now able to fine-tune the way the campus spam filter handles email sent to your email addresses. You can do this via your Proofpoint profile.

Instructions

  1. Click on Manage My Account in the End User Digest that a campus member receives when spam has been quarantined. If you do not have an End User Digest or Quarantine Digest, send an email to security@tamu.edu. The email security administrators will be able to provide access to your quarantine profile.
  2. Click on Profile in the lower left corner of the Proofpoint quarantine screen.
  3. Select the level of filtering you want from the four levels of spam detection.
    1. Default – This level is the default level of spam filtering employed at TAMU.
    2. Less Aggressive – This level loosens the spam filter, allowing more email to be delivered to you. This reduces instances the possibility of legitimate mail being caught by accident, but also increases the amount of spam that is not filtered out.
    3. More Aggressive – This level tightens the spam filtering rules to catch even more spam. However, it will also increase the likelihood that legitimate messages may be flagged as spam and quarantined.
    4. Most Aggressive – This level has the most strict filtering rules in place.
  4. Click Save.

If you choose either More Aggressive or Most Aggressive, make sure to check your spam quarantine regularly. It is possible that legitimate work and/or school-related messages could be caught by the more strict filters. Even if those messages are filtered, it is your responsibility to be aware of the information in those messages.
