Overview
After May 16, 2021, the way email flows to Texas A&M email addresses will be very different than in the past. This change does not affect Texas A&M Qatar, AgriLife, the Math department, or retirees.
Explanation
Historic behavior
- Employees were provided a mailbox on exchange.tamu.edu with an email address of NetID@exchange.tamu.edu.
- Students were provided a Texas A&M Gmail mailbox with an email address of NetID@email.tamu.edu.
- Some employees also had Texas A&M Gmail mailboxes and addresses, and some students also had Exchange mailboxes and addresses.
- All students and employees have an address of NetID@tamu.edu that could be configured to deliver email to either their Exchange mailbox or their Gmail mailbox.
This situation resulted in confusion as to which email address to use and which email mailbox needed to be checked to receive email.
Current behavior
After May 16, 2021, employees and students will only have either an Exchange email mailbox or a Texas A&M Gmail mailbox. Some divisions with the university may mandate which account will be used by their employees, while others may allow their employees to choose which account they can use. In both cases, ALL EMAIL sent to a tamu.edu address will be delivered to that mailbox.
For an employee required to use, or who chooses to use, an Exchange mailbox, any email sent to NetID@exchange.tamu.edu, NetID@tamu.edu, NetID@email.tamu.edu, etc. will be delivered to their Exchange mailbox. No email will be delivered to their TAMU Gmail mailbox, if they had one.
For a student who chooses to use a Texas A&M Gmail mailbox, any email sent to NetID@exchange.tamu.edu, NetID@tamu.edu, NetID@email.tamu.edu, etc. will be delivered to their Texas A&M Gmail mailbox. No email will be delivered to their Exchange mailbox, if they had one.
