Progressive Discipline

Overview

Texas A&M University supports the use of progressive discipline, where appropriate, in managing employee performance.

Use this service request to ask questions about:

  • The Progressive Discipline Process:  Understand the steps and procedures involved in progressive discipline.
  • Coaching Sessions: Learn about the initial step in addressing performance problems through coaching.
  • First and Second Disciplinary Actions: Get guidance on handling continued performance issues and the appropriate disciplinary actions.
  • Termination or Alternatives: Understand the final steps if performance issues persist, including termination or other alternatives.
  • LinkedIn Learning Resources:  Access learning resources for Managers to support their employees by learning coaching strategies along with becoming a better leader.

Eligibility

Eligibility and approval will vary depending on circumstances and type. Generally, progressive discipline applies to non-faculty employees as outlined in System Regulation 32.02.02.

  • 32.02.02:  Discipline and Dismissal of Nonfaculty Employees:  Outlines the TAMUS System policy on discipline and dismissal of employees, detailing procedures for managing employee conduct, performance issues, and the steps for disciplinary actions or dismissals.
  • Discipline and Dismissal Procedures for Nonfaculty Employees:  Provides guidelines on the discipline and dismissal process at Texas A&M along with detailing procedures.
  • Manager' Notes:  Serves as a supervisor's working reference file to track significant communication with an employee about their job performance. It includes entries for both positive recognition and constructive feedback.
  • Memo of Expectations for Attendance:  Memorandum used to outline the attendance expectations and requirements for employees.
  • Memo of Expectations for Performance:  Memorandum used to outline the performance expectations and requirements for employees.
  • Personnel Corrective Action Template:  Template used for documenting and managing employee performance issues and corrective actions.
