Adobe Sign - Creating a Digital ID

Overview

A digital signature is a type of Electronic Signature that uses a certificate-based Digital-ID. These may be a more secure electronic signature that is generated using a digital certificate and cryptographically bound to the document. 

Instructions

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat and log in. You can verify you are logged in by clicking the user icon in the upper right of your Acrobat window.

  2. Open Acrobat preferences.

    2. macOS - Click Acrobat in the menu bar, then click on Preferences.

  3. Select Signatures from the Categories list.

  4. Click More in the section labeled Identities & Trusted Certificates.

  5. Click Add ID in the Digital ID and Trusted Certificates Settings window.

  6. Select the radio button next to A new digital ID I want to create now.

  7. Click Next.
    1. Windows only: Select the radio button next to New PKCS#12 digital ID file.

    2. Click Next.
       
  8. Enter your digital signature information.
    • Name
    • Organizational Unit (ex. Technology Services)
    • Organization Name (ex. Texas A&M University)
    • Email Address

       Enter your digital signature information in the "Add Digital ID" window
       
  9. Click Next.
  10. Enter a strong password. This password will be used when you sign or decrypt documents using your Digital ID.

  11. Click Finish. Your Digital ID file will be displayed in the Digital ID and Trusted Certificate Settings window.
    Click Finish.
     
  12. Select your new Digital ID.
  13. Click on Usage Options and select Use for Signing. A pen icon will appear to the left your your Digital ID in the Digital ID and Trusted Certificate Settings window.

    Click on Usage Options and select Use for Signing.
     
  14. Click Close to close the Digital ID and Trusted Certificate Settings window.
  15. Click OK to exit the Adobe Acrobat preferences.
