Admin By Request (ABR) allows you to request admin privileges on your university-owned Windows computer, without an administrator account.
Checking for Admin By Request
To confirm if Admin By Request is installed on your computer:
- Open your task tray (in the bottom right corner of the taskbar, near the clock).
- Confirm the ABR icon displays (a green circle with a white checkmark). Hovering over the icon displays, “Request administrator access”.

How to Use Admin By Request
Admin By Request provides an Admin Session functionality that allows you to elevate one or more tasks as admin within a 15 minute period. Tasks begun as admin will continue running through their completion, even after the Admin Session ends.
To Start an Admin Session
- Open your task tray.
- Click on the ABR icon.

- Select “Request administrator access”.

- An ABR pop-up will ask if you want to request admin access. Click “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

- Selecting “Yes” starts the admin session and displays a 15-minute countdown timer on the bottom right of your screen. Selecting “No” will cancel the process.

- During your admin session, if you are asked for a username and password, please enter the username and password you used to log in to the computer.

- When the countdown timer ends, your admin session is ended. If you complete your actions early, you may click “Finish” to end the admin session.
Additional Tools
For some admin tasks, additional tools are provided by Admin By Request.
- Open your task tray.
- Click on the ABR icon.
- Hover over “Tools” to open a sub-menu.

- Select the tool best suited for your use.
- Depending on the tool, you may encounter User Account Control pop-ups. Click “Yes” to continue the process or “No” to cancel.

While using Admin By Request, you may see a pop-up asking for a PIN code. This occurs in the rare event an action is blocked by a security policy.
To resolve this:
- On the PIN Code pop-up, click “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

- Contact your local IT support team and provide them PIN 1 (151848, in the example image below) and your Computer Name (in the bottom left corner of the pop-up—91K7FS3, in the example image below).

- Your local IT support team will provide you a unique code to enter for PIN 2. Enter that code and click “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

- You now will be able to perform the action.
