What is Google Gemini?
Google Gemini is a web-based chat interface that provides direct access to Google AI. Gemini will respond to prompts using Google's Large Language Models. Being multimodal, Gemini can process "different types of information including text, code, audio, image and video." What is Google Gemini with data protection?
Texas A&M campus members have access to Google Gemini with data protection, a more secure alternative to the consumer version of Gemini (Google’s generative AI chatbot). When logged in with your Texas A&M account, data shared with Google Gemini will not be used or reviewed by humans for model improvement. This helps ensure university data will not be used to train or improve any generative AI models.
Who can use Gemini?
Texas A&M students, faculty, staff and retirees who have activated their Texas A&M Google account can use Gemini with data protection. To learn more about activating your account visit Google Apps at Texas A&M.
How do I log in to Gemini?
Go to https://gemini.google.com and log in with your @tamu.edu email address and password. A shield icon will appear in the prompt field when you are logged in and indicates your data will be protected.
How does Gemini protect my data?
All users who log in with their @tamu.edu email address get enterprise-grade data protections when they use Google Gemini.
- Submissions are not used to train models and are never reviewed by humans or used for other customers.
- Your interactions with Gemini stay within our organization. Critical data cannot be used in Gemini, according to our restrictions of use https://it.tamu.edu/google/terms.html.
What can Google Gemini do?
Google Gemini is an AI-powered chatbot tool designed by Google to simulate human conversations using natural language processing and machine learning. Gemini is designed around search and aims to allow for more natural language queries, rather than keywords, for search. Gemini's AI is trained around natural-sounding conversational queries and responses. Instead of just giving a list of answers, it provides context to the responses. It is also designed to help with follow-up questions -- something new to search.
Google Gemini can be used for a variety of tasks, including:
- Generating text, such as articles, code, scripts, musical pieces, email, letters, etc.
- Translating languages
- Writing different kinds of creative content
- Answering your questions in an informative way
Is Gemini free to use?
Gemini is free to use for university students, faculty, and staff with a Google account. However, there are different tiers of access with varying features and privacy settings.
- Gemini: Provides access to basic Gemini features with added data protection.
- Gemini Advanced (Under Review) : Offers additional features and more robust privacy controls. (The TAMU Gemini Advanced service is still in review.)
How do usage limits work?
Every campus member with a @tamu.edu Google account can use the Gemini app and features in Gemini for Google Workspace 1,000 times per month. Usage limits reset on the first day of each month.

What best practices should I follow when using Gemini?
- Sign in at gemini.google.com with your @tamu.edu email address and password. Personal google accounts use the consumer version, which isn’t protected.
- Data Awareness:
- Only use approved university cloud resources and storage when handling confidential or sensitive university data. Many AI and Machine Language (ML) tools on the market do not offer adequate security protections for university data. If you have questions about potential use of an AI/ML platform, please contact security@tamu.edu.
What is the difference between Gemini and Copilot?
Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini are both AI chatbot tools, but they serve different purposes and have distinct features:
- Google Gemini is a browser-based generative AI chatbot, designed to simplify information retrieval and help with writing, generating images, planning, learning, and more.
- Microsoft Copilot is a browser-based generative AI chatbot that uses large language models (LLMs) to assist users with tasks such as generating text or images, summarizing info, automating repetitive tasks, and more.
Can I delete my Gemini chats?
No. Gemini chats created while logged in with a work or school account cannot be deleted.
