Using Personal Wireless Devices in Residence Halls

Overview

Texas A&M University Access Control (AC-18) prohibits students from using personal or unauthorized wireless access points, switches and DHCP servers in residence halls. Personal wireless equipment can disrupt residence hall wireless networks. Multiple wireless signals interfere with each other, causing disruptions and poor network performance for everyone. Personal Wi-Fi is a security risk: providing unauthorized access to the University’s network violates state laws and University policy. This rule applies to all residence hall students, whether or not you live in a hall with TAMU WiFi wireless service.

If you disable the wireless feature, you are permitted to have routers, printers, DVD/Blu-ray players, game consoles, etc.

NOTE: Texas A&M Technology Services can detect unauthorized Wi-Fi equipment. Students who violate the policy will lose their Ethernet connection in their room and may face further university disciplinary actions. To ensure you are not violating the policy, turn off the wireless feature on all routers, printers, DVD/Blu-ray players, gaming systems, etc. Visit https://u.tamu.edu/WirelessAccess for more information about Wireless Access policies at Texas A&M University.
