Resnet - Connecting your devices

Overview

Resnet is a wired network available in campus residence halls that provides a fast and secure network connection for residents' computers and other network devices. 

Smart TVs

• Once you have booted up the TV you will need to find the MAC address. If possible please refer to the user manual on where to locate the MAC address.
  • It should be listed as Ethernet or Wired MAC Address 
• On a different device, open a web browser and head to resnet.tamu.edu to register the SmartTV's MAC address 
  • If an adapter is being used, the MAC address of the adapter must also be registered. 
• Once completed, shut down the TV and unplug it. We recommend waiting 15 minutes. 
• While the TV is off, plug the Ethernet Cable into the TV. 
• Turn the TV back on, and you should automatically be connected.

RokuTV with Ethernet Adapter

Note: The following does require an internet connection, if you are on campus, we suggest using a wireless hotspot on your phone (temporarily ONLY). Please turn the hotspot off as soon as this process is complete. 

1. Register the device at https://my.roku.com/link using a web browser and your Roku account
2. Allow the device to update (you may have to manually do this through the settings) once connected to the temporary hotspot
   1. Once the updates are finished disable the hot spot
3. Register this adapter to the Resnet network via a computer:
   1. Plug Ethernet cable to USB adapter into the computer 
   2. Plug the Ethernet cable into Ethernet port on the wall and in the computer
   3. Disable/Turn off wireless on the computer and go to resnet.tamu.edu 
   4. It should then be prompted to register the device
   5. See section below for instructions on retrieving mac address of the adapter if it is not automatically registered.
   6. For a Windows machine:
      1. Go to the control panel
      2. Select Network and Sharing Center
      3. Select Change Adapter Settings
      4. Find the USB Ethernet adapter and right click
      5. Select Status
      6. Select Details
      7. The MAC address will be the one that is called Physical Address
   7. For Mac machine:
      1. Download & Install the software for the adapter
      2. Go to System Preferences
      3. Go to Network
      4. Select the USB-to-Ethernet adapter
      5. Select Advance
      6. Select Hardware
      7. The MAC address will be displayed with colons
   8. Plug the Ethernet cable from the wall into the adapter
   9. Plug the USB adapter into the Roku TV
   10. Unplug the computer from the wall for about 5 seconds and then plug it back in
   11. The Roku TV should now be connected to the Resnet network and you should be able to use apps as normal

   If the Roku TV does not seem to be connected, navigate to the network settings and re-register the MAC address by going to resnet.tamu.edu

Nintendo Switch

Possible Solution One: 

• In order to connect a Nintendo Switch you would need to have an adapter with an ASIX AX88772 Chipset, This is the same as the official adapters endorsed by Nintendo. Here is an example one from amazon
• The adapters wired MAC Address will then need to be registered at resnet.tamu.edu. 
  • The Adapters wired Mac Address can be found by going to
    • System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings > Wired Connection. While the adapter is plugged into the Switch. It should be listed at the bottom of the page.
• With the Switch and Adapter connected to the port via Ethernet Cable, turn it off completely for 30 + seconds.
• Turn the Switch back on. 
  • If the Switch still doesn't connect then unplug the ethernet cable from the adapter, Turn off the switch completely.
  • Once it is off plug the ethernet cable back into the adapter and make sure the adapter is inserted into the switch, then wait about a minute to turn back on the switch and it should now be connected.

Possible Solution Two: 

• Using a Router along with the Adapter mentioned previously in this sequence.
  • Wall Port > Ethernet > Router (With Wireless off) > Ethernet > USB Adapter > Nintendo Switch.
• Register the Routers, Adapter and the Switch MAC address to the ResNet website
• With everything connected to each other turn off the Router for 30 + seconds.
• Turn the Router back on. 

Xbox

• Once you have booted up the Xbox head to: Settings > Network > Advanced Settings
  • Under Advanced Settings locate the "Wired MAC Address" 
• On a different device open a web browser and head to resnet.tamu.edu to register your Xbox's MAC Address.
  • Click "Register your Device" and follow the next prompts.
  • Input the MAC Address we found earlier in Advanced settings and select "Register" 
• Once you have registered the Xbox, unplug the ethernet cable from it. 
  • Power down the Xbox, wait for it to completely turn off then plug the ethernet cable back in.
  • Wait about a minute to make sure ResNet fully registers the device then turn it back on.

And the Xbox should now be connected to ResNet! 

Playstation

Playstation 4

1. Boot up the PlayStation without any disk in the drive wait for the menu to pop up.
   1. Navigate to the Settings icon.
   2. Scroll to System.
   3. Select System Information.
   4. Locate the Mac Address for LAN (Ethernet).
2. Open a web browser on a different device and go to https://resnet.tamu.edu to register your PlayStation's MAC address.
   1. Click Register your Device and follow the next prompts.
   2. Enter the MAC Address listed in your Playstation's System information.
   3. Select Register.
3. Once you have registered the PlayStation, unplug the ethernet cable from it.
4. Power down the PlayStation, wait for it to completely turn off then plug the ethernet cable back in.
5. Wait about a minute to make sure ResNet fully registers the device then turn it back on.

Playstation 5

1. Power on the PS5 without a disc in the system.
   1. In the PS5 menu, arrow up and select Settings.
   2. Scroll down to Network.
   3. Scroll down to View Connection Status.
   4. The MAC Address will be listed next to MAC Address (LAN).
2. Open a web browser on a different device and go to https://resnet.tamu.edu to register your PlayStation's MAC address.
   1. Click Register your Device and follow the next prompts.
   2. Enter the MAC Address listed in your Playstation's System information.
   3. Select Register.
3. Once you have registered the PlayStation, unplug the ethernet cable from it.
4. Power down the PlayStation, wait for it to completely turn off then plug the ethernet cable back in.
5. Wait about a minute to make sure ResNet fully registers the device then turn it back on.
