Overview
The following installation steps may vary depending on version. Note that you must create a Mathworks account using your @tamu.edu email address to use this process. At the end of this article, there are also directions for updating the license.dat file locally on your machine and some troubleshooting tips for common errors you may encounter.
Instructions
- If you have a Mathworks account with your TAMU email address, and have already associated it with the TAMU license, skip to step 6.
- Go to www.mathworks.com and create an account using your @tamu.edu email address. Do this by choosing Sign In.
- Choose Create Account and follow the instructions, remembering to use your @tamu.edu email address.
- Once you have your account and are logged in, under your name, choose Associate License.
- Use the License Number provided to you. This will associate your Mathworks account with the TAMU Matlab License (Currently labelled "Primary SELL Matlab License")
- Go to www.mathworks.com/downloads (log in if you are not currently signed in).
- Choose the version of Matlab you wish to install (note that previous versions are available as well as the most recent).
- Find the downloaded install file (look in your Downloads folder, look for "matlab_<version>_win64.exe" and run it. When the option comes up to select the installation method, you MUST choose Log in with a MathWorks Account. If you choose Use a File Installation Key, it will not install Matlab,it will only install the License Manager.
- Continue until you get to the point where it asks you to log in with your MathWorks account. Again, you must login with your MathWorks account, and not the Activation Key.
- Continue until you reach a point where you are asked to select a license or enter an Activation Key. Click Select a license and use the TAMU license (currently labelled "Primary SELL Matlab license")
- Select the installation folder. It is recommended that you leave the default unless you have a particular reason to change it.
- Choose the products to install.
- Provide the license file location. This is the license.dat file you should have been provided access to download (or provided the file itself). This does not have to be in any particular directory - it is only used during this installation process.
- Continue until you get to the Confirmation screen. Click Install to begin the Matlab installation. Once it is complete, you should be able to run Matlab.
If you encounter any issues after the installation (especially -39 error or -87 error), please contact the TAMU Software Center. We will need the name of the machine Matlab is installed on, and if you know the name of the Matlab Group it should be associated with, that as well. We can be contacted at software@tamu.edu or softwarecenter@tamu.edu or via Help Desk Central at (979)845-8300.
If you simply need to update the license.dat file locally on your machine, follow these steps:
- Download the license.dat file referenced in step 13 above.
- Determine the location of MATLAB's license file locally on your machine.
- For Windows users, this is either located in C:\Program Files\MATLAB\bin\win32 (for older versions of MATLAB) or C:\Program Files\MATLAB\licenses (for newer versions). Your path may differ slightly, depending on your original install path for MATLAB. You will find either the license.dat or network.lic files located in one of those folders respectively.
- For UNIX or Mac users, the license.dat file is located in the $MATLAB/etc directory, where "$MATLAB" is the installation path of MATLAB on the system.
- Make a backup copy of the existing license.dat (or network.lic) file that you find in the directory.
- Copy the license.dat file you downloaded from this page into that directory. You will need to rename license.dat to network.lic if the file was found in the MATLAB\licenses directory
- Restart MATLAB.
Troubleshooting
- If you are having problems running the software, please call Help Desk Central at (979) 845-8300.
- Generally speaking, the errors you might receive from the license manager are all pretty straightforward. The two most common errors are listed below:
- User/host not on INCLUDE list for feature (-39,349)
Usually this simply means your host is not listed in the options file of the license manager. Make sure you have provided the machine name and the Matlab Group the machine needs to be added to.
- Checkout exceeds MAX specified in options file (-87,353)
This appears to be the same error as -4 above. You have checked out the maximum number of assigned to your Matlab Group. [ NOTE: When you Matlab license expires, this number is set to 0. ]
