Overview
Televisions are allowed in residence halls on the Texas A&M University campus. However, they must meet certain technical requirements in order to display television programming provided by Texas A&M. Further, there are requirements for connecting "smart TVs" to the network in order to access internet content from your television.
Accessing cable television stations
Television stations available in residence halls through Texas A&M are sent as a digital signal. This digital signal is encoded using a method called Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). In order to view channels, you must have a television or cable box that is capable of decoding QAM transmissions. Most televisions sold since 2006 include a QAM tuner. However, many inexpensive models are still sold which do not include a built-in QAM tuner. For these televisions, you will need to purchase a separate QAM-enabled cable box.
Smart televisions
A Smart Television is a TV that can connect to the internet. Many of these televisions use a wired Ethernet connection, and some use wireless connections.
If your smart TV uses a wired connection, it will need to be registered with ResNet.
If your smart TV uses a wireless connection, you can connect it using the TAMU_IoT Wireless Network.
