Canvas - Creating Practice Tests for Respondus LockDown Browser

 

Overview

These are steps to help you set up a practice exam with Respondus LockDown Browser using both the Classic or New Quiz feature in Canvas.

Instructions

NOTE: An assessment must already be created so LockDown Browser can be added to it. Currently, LockDown Browser only integrates with Quizzes.

  1.  Navigate to and click Quizzes in the course navigation pane.
  2.  Add a Quiz by clicking the +Quiz button, in the top right corner.

  3. Choose either Classic or New Quiz from the pop-up window and select Submit.

  4. Create and set up the quiz (if needed, see steps ‘setup Practice Quiz for Classic Quizzes’ or ‘setup Practice Quiz for New Quizzes’ below.).

    Some common best practices around practice quizzes are:
    • Consider leaving the available from and until dates open, to allow students the ability to test throughout the entire semester.
    • Consider allowing unlimited attempts, to allow as many testing attempts as the students need.
    • If applicable, you may consider not counting the grade towards the final grade.
       
  5.  Navigate to and complete steps found under ‘Enable LockDown Browser’ and ‘Add LockDown Browser and Monitor to Practice Assessment (Quiz)’.

Setup Practice Quiz using for New Quizzes

NOTE: Follow Steps 1-3 under ‘Create a Practice Assessment (Quiz) in Canvas’ before continuing.

  1. In the Assignment Name field, enter the name of your quiz. We suggest something to indicate it is a practice Quiz (i.e. Practice Quiz).
  2. Enter the total points possible. We suggest leaving it as 0 points. (If your quiz is worth 0 points, you can choose to not display the quiz in the Gradebook or student Grades page.)
  3. Select the appropriate Assignment group and choose how the grade is displayed to students.
  4. To remove this quiz from final grade calculations, click the Do not count this assignment towards the final grade checkbox. 
  5. If your Practice Quiz is set to 0 points, you can select Do not display in gradebook or the student’s grade page.

  6. Leave the 'Assign to' field set to Everyone and leave the 'Due', 'Available from' and 'Until' dates blank. This will allow students to see and participate with the practice quiz on-demand or as they need.

  7. Click Build.

  8. Optional: You can add instructions by clicking the pencil icon to the right of ‘Instructions’.

  9. Click the plus icon to add a question.

  10.  In the pop out menu select the question type.

  11. Create the question content. We recommend having at least 1 question. 
  12. Click the Settings tab. Click on One Question at a time and Allow multiple attempts.

  14. Follow steps under 'Enable LockDown Browser' below. 

Setup Practice Quiz for Classic Quizzes

NOTE: Follow Steps 1-3 under ‘Create a Practice Assessment (Quiz)' in Canvas before continuing.

  1. In the Quiz Title field, enter the name of your quiz. We suggest something to indicate it is a practice Quiz (i.e. Practice Quiz)
  2. Next to Quiz Type, Click the drop-down arrow icon and select Practice Quiz.

  3.  Click the box next to Allow Multiple Attempts. This should be bubbled in with a check mark. 
  4. Optional: You can leave the ‘Let Students See Their Quiz Responses (Incorrect Questions Will Be Marked in Student Feedback)’ enabled or selected. Alternatively, you can de-select this option.
  5. Click the box next to Show one question at a time.

  6. Leave the 'Assign to' field set to Everyone and leave the 'Due', 'Available from' and 'Until' dates blank. This will allow students to see and participate with the practice quiz on-demand or as they need.

  7. Scroll back to the top of the page, and click the Questions tab. Then click the +New Question button. We recommend having at least 1 question.

  8. Select a question type and create a question. Click Update Question when you have completed your question.

  10. Follow steps under 'Enable LockDown Browser' below.

Enable LockDown Browser

  1.  Navigate to Settings in the Course navigation pane.
  2.  Select Navigation from the top menu.

  3. Locate LockDown Browser
  4. Click the three dots menu icon and select Enable.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Save to apply the settings change.

Add LockDown Browser and Monitor to Practice Assessment (Quiz):

NOTE: Once the assessment has been created and LockDown Browser has been enabled, instructors can require LockDown Browser. To do this:

  1. Navigate to and click LockDown Browser on the course navigation menu. Instructors should see a list of the quizzes in the current Canvas course.
    •  
  2. Locate the quiz that LockDown Browser will be added to, click the down arrow and select Settings.

  3. Select the Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam radio button.
  4. Select Require Respondus Monitor for this exam under the proctoring options to add Respondus Monitor and require a webcam,
  5. Adjust any additional settings for the exam.
  6. Click Save + Close.

  7. Navigate back to Quizzes in the course navigation pane.
  8. Confirm that the title of the quiz now includes Requires LockDown Browser. If Respondus Monitor was enabled, the title will also list + Webcam.
  9. To the right of the Quiz title, click the circle with a slash icon to show a green bubble with a checkmark (This will publish your quiz).
