Unable to connect ethernet: Unidentified network - No Internet Access

Issue

After switching ethernet cable from one computer to another, the new computer showed this error "Unidentified network - No Internet Access"  

Environment

• OS: Windows 10 
• Location: On Campus - Allen Building 
• Error Message (If applicable): Unidentified network - No Internet Access
• Recent changes: Using a new computer to access Internet. 

Resolution

  1. Go to Network & Sharing Center on the old device
  2. Click Adapter Settings
  3. Right-click on the Ethernet network and go to Properties
  4. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) and go to Properties again
  5. Copy down:
    1. the IP Address
    2. Subnet Mask
    3. Default Gateway
    4. Preferred DNS Address
    5. Alternative DNS Address
  6. Go to those same settings on the new computer
  7. Choose Use the following IP/DNS Address and paste the details from the old computer
  8. The subnet mask will auto-populate after entering the IP address and will be different. Change it to what it is on the OLD COMPUTER.

It should now work on the new device

Cause

The old computer had specific IP & DNS address assigned.
