This article explains how Texas A&M counts creditable state service for longevity and hazardous duty pay, including employment with the Texas A&M System and other State of Texas agencies, even for student workers. Eligible employees earn paid vacation based on total state service, may use it after six months of continuous state employment, and supervisors can approve or deny requests based on business needs. Vacation balances can transfer between Texas state agencies, and employees who have met the six‑month requirement are eligible for a taxed lump‑sum payout of unused vacation—and associated holiday hours—upon separation, with options to defer the payment into certain retirement accounts.
Employees accrue vacation based on years of state service and may carry forward unused hours to the next fiscal year up to the maximums shown in the schedule, with part-time employees earning and carrying hours proportionally. Any vacation hours above the carry-forward limit convert to sick leave at the start of the next fiscal year, so employees should monitor their projected balances in Workday and coordinate time off with their supervisor in advance.
Vacation leave accruals for return-to-work retirees depend on when they retired and when they are rehired, with key cutoff dates of June 1, 2005, and Sept. 1, 2005, determining whether accruals are based on total state service or only service since rehire. Return-to-work retirees may have sick leave restored if they return within certain timeframes, receive leave and holiday pay based on their FTE, do not receive longevity pay, and temporary/casual staff are not eligible for leave or holiday pay
