Demotions

Overview
A demotion occurs when an individual moves from one position to another position having a lower pay range and/or less senior title requiring less education, experience and responsibility. Consult with Employee Relations before proceeding to the steps below. Approval from Employee Relations will be required for all voluntary and involuntary demotions.

Eligibility

Eligibility and approval for promotions will depend on the specific circumstances and type of position. The following criteria must be met:

  • The employee must have education, experience, and other qualifications that meet or exceed the minimum required qualifications as documented on the position description.
  • The employee must have been employed in their present position for at least three months. An exception to the three-month requirement may be approved by the Vice President for Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness or designee.
