Moving to Duo Mobile for Identity Verification at Texas A&M University

Overview

Texas A&M University is enhancing account security by updating our Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) process. Beginning in fall 2025, text message (SMS) and phone call verification will no longer be available. If you currently use these methods to log in, you will receive email instructions before the change takes effect for your account.

Campus members are strongly urged to download the Duo Mobile app and begin using it before these changes impact their account. The Duo Mobile app supports push notifications, passcodes, and biometric options (like fingerprint or face ID) on compatible devices.

Device Requirements

  • A compatible smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android).

  • Access to your device's app store (Apple App Store or Google Play Store).

  • Your Texas A&M NetID and password.

  • If using a kiosk: Your mobile device and Texas A&M ID (Aggie Card).

Note: If you do not have a compatible mobile device, contact Help Desk Central for alternative options, such as hardware tokens or other approved methods.

Step-by-Step Guide to Set Up Duo Mobile

Step 1: Download the App

  • Open your device's app store.
  • Search for "Duo Mobile" (developed by Duo Security).
  • Download and install the app. It's free and available for both iOS and Android devices.

Step 2: Add Duo Mobile to Your Account

  • Visit Texas A&M's Duo website at it.tamu.edu/duo.
  • We recommend doing this on a separate device so you can scan the QR code that displays.
  • Log in with your Texas A&M NetID and password.
  • Navigate to Add/Manage Devices > Manage Devices in Gateway.
  • Select Add a Device and choose Duo Mobile as the option.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to scan the QR code with the Duo Mobile app or enter the activation code manually.

Step 3: Test and Verify

  • Log in to a Texas A&M service that requires Duo (e.g., email or Gateway).
  • Choose Duo Mobile as your verification method.
  • Approve the push notification or enter a passcode from the app.

Tip: Download the Duo Mobile app on a second device in case you ever lose your primary device or forget it.

Alternative Setup Method: Using a Duo Self-Service Kiosk

If you prefer in-person assistance or encounter issues with the online setup, visit one of the Duo Self-Service Kiosks located across campus. Kiosks are located at:

  • Help Desk Central
  • Memorial Student Center (MSC)
  • General Services Complex (GSC)
  • Evans Library
  • Other locations across the main campus and satellite sites

See the full list of Duo Self-Service Kiosks in the Knowledge Base.

Using a Kiosk

  • Bring your mobile device and Texas A&M ID (Aggie Card).
  • Approach the kiosk and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Scan your Aggie Card when prompted.
  • Download or activate Duo Mobile on your device via the kiosk.
  • Test the verification to confirm it's working.

Kiosks are available during regular business hours, but check the Knowledge Base for specific times and availability.

What If I Get Locked Out?

If you haven't downloaded Duo Mobile before phone call and text message options are removed from your account:

  • Call Help Desk Central at 979-845-8300 to request a temporary bypass code.
  • Or, visit a Duo Self-Service Kiosk with your mobile device and Aggie Card to enroll on the spot.

Troubleshooting and Support

Common Issues:

  • App not receiving push notifications: Ensure notifications are enabled in your device settings and the app. Check your Internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data).
  • QR code scan failing: Try entering the activation code manually or restarting the app.
  • Device compatibility: Duo Mobile requires iOS 14+ or Android 10+. If your device is older, contact support for alternatives.

For additional help, contact Help Desk Central at helpdesk@tamu.edu or 979-845-8300. For video verification requirements, please have a webcam or video enabled device available.

Why This Change Matters

This transition to app-based verification reduces risks associated with SMS and phone calls. These changes are being made in accordance with The Texas A&M University System’s updated guidance to enhance security across all System members.
