Former Student Account Activation

  1. Go to the Texas A&M University Howdy website at http://howdy.tamu.edu and click on the Information about Former Student Access button under the "Log in with your NetID to get Started" button.
  2. A new window will appear containing three options. Select the option that pertains to you, carefully read the information that appears, and follow the instructions. If you have not been enrolled at Texas A&M in the last two years, you will need to complete the former student questionnaire. To do so, click on the Former Student Questionnaire link.
  3. Fill out the questionnaire then click Submit.
NOTE: If you receive an error saying, “You have answered one or more of the questions incorrectly”, refer to the section below concerning common errors.
  4. After submitting the questionnaire, you should receive an email from helpdesk@tamu.edu to the address you provided within an hour. The email will contain your UIN (Universal Identification Number), your date of birth, and a link where you will go to activate your account. The activation process must be completed within three hours of receiving the email.
NOTE: If you do not receive one and you know your UIN, you should still be able to activate your account by going to gateway.tamu.edu/activation directly. If you are having issues, please email helpdesk@tamu.edu with your UIN and an approximate time that you submitted the questionnaire.
  5. Once you click on the link in the email, you will be presented with the “Former Student Account Activation” page. Enter your UIN and date of birth, then click Begin Activation Process to start to set up your account.
  6. You may be asked to update your information on the next page. Provide your current contact and residence information so that the university will have an updated record for you. Once finished, click Update Entry and Continue.
  7. You will now be prompted to create a password for your account. Once the password is entered and confirmed, click Activate Account.
NOTE: This password must contain at least 8 characters, an uppercase and lowercase letter, and a non-alphabetic special character (numbers, symbols, and spaces).
  8. If you successfully submitted a password, you should be shown a "Your account has been activated. Access to some resources may take up to 24 hours"
NOTE: Some resources may not be available for the first 24 hours; however, you should be able to login to the account after the first four hours. When logging in, your UIN will function as your username and your password will be the one you created in step 7.

Common Errors when Activating Former Student Account
