Software - Windows on Mac

Issue

Installing Bootcamp for classes/software. Alternatively, it is also possible to purchase and download Parallels instead of Bootcamp.

Environment

• OS:  MAC
• Application/Host/Website:  BootCamp Assistant or Parallels Desktop

Resolution

To use Parallels Desktop, here is the website to purchase and download (as software.tamu.edu does not sell the program):
https://www.parallels.com/

And for specific instructions regarding the download process, please visit this site:
https://kb.parallels.com/en/4729

To use BootCamp Assistant,

  1. Open BootCamp Assistant.
  2. Verify if you need ISO or installation media.
  3. Plug in USB with installer/ISO. Allow BootCamp to locate it or manually search for the file.
  4. Specify partition sizes. Usually a minimum of 60GB is recommended.
  5. Allow for support software to download.
  6. After this, the partition should be created and the computer should boot into the Windows installer.
    1. if the installer does not boot itself then you will need to grab a Bootcamp media installation USB and manually boot into it and install WIN onto the partition. (sometimes the created Bootcamp partition will need
to be reformatted to actually allow the installation to begin.)
  7. Install WIN normally.

TIP: To switch between OS (Mac vs. Windows) hold the OPTION key at restarts or startups.

You may also use System Preferences>Startup Disk > *Specify Partition* to switch between Operating Systems from MAC or from Windows you can click the taskbar and "Restart in MAC OS"
