Eligible Dependents

Overview

Eligible dependents for The Texas A&M University System group insurance plans include various family members. This ensures that employees can provide coverage for their loved ones under the university’s benefits program. Here are the key points:

Eligible Dependents
  • Spouse: Your current spouse.
  • Common-Law Marriage Partner: As defined by State law.
  • Dependent Children: Up to age 26 (regardless of marital status), including:
    • Natural children
    • Stepchildren
    • Legally-adopted children
    • Grandchildren in the household
    • Children of whom you or your spouse are the legal guardian
Submitting Benefits Documentation:  Timelines and Life Event Guidelines

Employees must submit benefits documentation according to the following timeline, based on their selected coverage start date or qualifying life event:

  • For coverage beginning on the date of hire, documentation must be submitted within 7 calendar days of the hire date.

  • For coverage beginning on the first of the month following the hire date or the employer contribution eligibility date (typically the first of the month following 60 days of employment), documentation must be submitted within 31 calendar days of the hire date.

  • For qualifying life events, documentation must be submitted prior to approval and no later than 31 calendar days from the date of the event.

Failure to meet these deadlines may result in delayed coverage or loss of eligibility for certain benefits.
