Eligible dependents for The Texas A&M University System group insurance plans include various family members. This ensures that employees can provide coverage for their loved ones under the university’s benefits program. Here are the key points:

Eligible Dependents
  • Spouse: Your current spouse.
  • Common-Law Marriage Partner: As defined by State law.
  • Dependent Children: Up to age 26 (regardless of marital status), including:
    • Natural children
    • Stepchildren
    • Legally-adopted children
    • Grandchildren in the household
    • Children of whom you or your spouse are the legal guardian
Verification Documentation
  • Legal Marriage Documents:
    • Most recent federal tax return (fiscal information can be redacted), or
    • Marriage certificate and proof of joint ownership* less than six months old.
  • Common Law Marriage Documents:
    • Texas Declaration of Informal/Common Law Marriage from the county where the marriage was recognized or recorded, and
    • Proof of joint ownership* less than six months old, or
    • Most recent federal tax return showing married filing jointly or separately.
  • Biological Child Documents:
    • Birth certificate listing the employee as the mother or father, or
    • Documentation on hospital letterhead indicating the birth date of the child (if under 6 months old) as temporary enrollment, followed by the birth certificate when received.
  • Stepchild Documents:
    • Child’s birth certificate showing the child’s parent is the employee’s spouse, and
    • Marriage certificate showing legal marriage between the employee and the child’s parent.
  • Adopted Child Documents:
    • Initial stage: Official court/agency placement papers.
    • Mid-stage: Official court adoption agreement.
    • Final stage: Birth certificate.
  • Disabled Child Age 26 or Older:
    • Doctor’s statement regarding the physical or mental condition, ability to maintain self-sustaining employment, and condition occurrence before age 26.

      *Proof of joint ownership includes documents such as a lease agreement, mortgage statement, or utility bill listing both names.
