Respondus Lockdown Browser - A VM has been detected

Introduction

Respondus can be really tricky sometimes with making sure that no extra 3rd party software's or Virtual machines are running. We have found a couple ways to fix issues with it saying that a VM is running when there is not one.

Step 1: Turning off Anti-Virus programs on the computer

Anti-Virus programs like MacAfee, Norton Antivirus,  and Avast sometimes run small Virtual Machines to help detect malware trying to enter your computer. So if you go into these programs and either turn them off or just completely uninstall them that can help solve the issue. If you do this we advising installing a scanning Anti-Virus software like Malwarebytes if you turn off or uninstall the software.

Step 2: Allowing Respondus through your Firewall

The 2nd best solution for this issue is to make sure that Respondus is allowed through your firewall on Private networks. For some reason when its install on some machines, Respondus does not have this set by default. You can change this by searching for "Windows Defender Firewall" in your windows search or going to Control Panel then all control panel items then choosing the "Windows Defender Firewall"

Once in there select the "Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall" in the top left.

Once there find Respondus Lockdown Browser in the list of apps and features and make sure the box is checked for both "Public" and "Private" networks. You can change this by hitting the "Change Settings" button at the top.

One of these 2 solutions should fix the error. If not you will want to contact the Office of Academic Innovation for further troubleshooting.
