Remote Desktop - Configuring and Using Remote Desktop and TAMU Gateway for Windows

Overview

If you need to access your work computer from off campus using a Windows computer, you can do so using Microsoft Remote Desktop. You do not need to connect to VPN to use rds.tamu.edu as your remote desktop gateway. If you connect to your work computer in this method, you will not need to use a VPN connection.

Instructions

Configuring Remote Desktop

  1. Click the Start Menu and type remote.
  2. Click on Remote Desktop Connection.

    Search for Remote Desktop Connection
     
  3. Click Show Options in the bottom-left of the Remote Desktop Connection screen.

  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. Click Settings.

    Click on Advanced Options and then on Settings
  6. Select Use these RD Gateway server settings:
  7. Enter rds.tamu.edu for the Server name.
  8. Make sure Allow me to select later is selected in Logon method.
  9. Make sure Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses is checked.
  10. Make sure that Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer is NOT selected.

  11. Click OK.

Connecting to Your Work Computer

  1. Click the General tab.
  2. Verify that the name of your computer is listed in the Computer: field. It must be entered in the format COMPUTERNAME.customers.ads.tamu.edu. If you do not know the name of your computer, or if you need assistance finding your computer name, send an email to rdp-request@tamu.edu.
    1. Note: If your computer uses a Static IP address, you can enter the IP address of your computer in place of your computer's name. This will allow a remote connection in the case of a DNS issue.
  3. Click Connect.

  4. Enter your Remote Desktop Gateway credentials.
    1. Enter AUTH\YourNetID as your user name on the RD Gateway Server Credentials screen. This is NOT your HSCID.
    2. Enter your NetID Password as the password on the RD Gateway Server Credentials screen.This is NOT your HSCID password.
    3. Click OK. You will receive a Duo push request to authenticate.

  5. Enter your work computer credentials.
    1. Enter AUTH\NetID for the username. You MUST enter AUTH\ before your NetID in this field.
    2. Enter your NetID password for the password.
    3. Click OK.

  6. Check the box marked "Don't ask me again for connections to this computer" and click Yes if you are prompted with a certificate message. This connection is secure.
