TAMU-OAL Scanning in the Open Access Labs

Overview

This document will outline the process for using the Canon CanoScan Scanners in the Open Access Labs.  These instructions work will all LiDE models (200, 210, and 220).

Opening the Scanning Software

  1. Click the magnifying glass in the Windows task bar to open the search box
  2. Search for "Scan"
  3. Select Windows Fax and Scan

Select the Scanner

  1. Once the software is open, in the menu bar choose "New Scan".  This will open a dialog box, where you can select the scanner.
  2. If a dialog box appears asking you to select your scanner, select the scanner based on the model number that is listed on the cover of the scanner you are using.  If the dialog box does not appear, move to the next section

Configuring the Scanner Settings, Preview and Scan

  • Make sure that the box next to “Preview or scan images as separate files” is unchecked
  • Once inside the software configure the settings for the type of document you are scanning
    • Profile
      • Photo will configure settings for a color picture (preset)
      • Document - Scanning for a black/ white 8.5 x 11 document (preset)
    • Source - Cannot be Changed
    • Color Format
      • Color
      • Grayscale
      • Black and White
    • File type
      • BMP
      • JPEG
      • PNG
      • TIFF
    • Resolution
      • Set resolution for your file type.  The higher the resolution the larger the document
        • Text can be scanned for the web at 72
        • Images can be scanned at 300
      • Brightness
      • Contrast
  • Once the settings are where you want them, click the "Preview" button.  This will pull up a sample in the preview pane.
  • If the dotted lines are around the area you wish to scan, click scan
  • If the dotted lines are not around the area you wish to scan, use the mouse to adjust the margins
  • Click Scan

Saving Your Document

As an Image

  1. Once the document is scanned in, you can return to the main screen of the software.  Click the image you just scanned.
  2. Click Save as from the menu bar at the top, or right click on the image and choose "Save As"
  3. Choose the file type you would like to use and location for saving the document.

Saving Your Document as a PDF

  1. If you wish to save your document at a PDF, from the menu bar choose the printer icon
  2. Select "Microsoft Print to PDF"
  3. Click Print and choose location to save document.
