Overview

Admin By Request (ABR) allows you to request admin privileges on your university-owned Windows computer, without changing your account into an admin account. ABR is replacing existing Endpoint Privilege Management (EPM) products used across campus.

Checking for Admin By Request

To confirm if Admin By Request is installed on your computer:

  1. Open your task tray (in the bottom right corner of the taskbar, near the clock).
  2. Confirm the ABR icon displays (a green circle with a white checkmark). Hovering over the icon displays, “Request administrator access”.

How to Use Admin By Request

There are two ways to use Admin By Request:

  • Run an application as an admin. Use this option when an application requires admin access to run.
  • Start an admin session. Use this option when you need to perform multiple admin tasks or need admin access for an extended period.

To run an application as an admin:

  1. Locate the application you wish to run.
  2. Right click on the application and select “Run as administrator”.

  1. A User Account Control pop-up will ask if you want to allow the app to make changes to your device. Click “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

  1. Selecting “Yes” allows you to run the application as an admin. Selecting “No” will cancel the process.

To start an admin session:

  1. Open your task tray.
  2. Click on the ABR icon.

  1. Select “Request administrator access”.

  1. An ABR pop-up will ask if you want to request admin access. Click “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

  1. Selecting “Yes” starts the admin session and displays a 15-minute countdown timer on the bottom right of your screen. Selecting “No” will cancel the process.

  1. During your admin session, if you are asked for a username and password, please enter the username and password you used to log in to the computer.

  1. When the countdown timer ends, your admin session is ended. If you complete your actions early, you may click “Finish” to end the admin session.

Additional Tools

For some admin tasks, neither run as admin nor admin session works best. In these instances, you can use some additional tools provided by Admin By Request.

  1. Open your task tray.
  2. Click on the ABR icon.
  3. Hover over “Tools” to open a sub-menu.

  1. Select the tool best suited for your use.
  2. Depending on the tool, you may encounter User Account Control pop-ups. Click “Yes” to continue the process or “No” to cancel.

PIN Codes

While using Admin By Request, you may see a pop-up asking for a PIN code. This occurs when the action is blocked by a security policy or you are not an authorized user.

To resolve this:

  1. On the PIN Code pop-up, click “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

  1. Contact your local IT support team and provide them PIN 1 (151848, in the example image below) and your Computer Name (in the bottom left corner of the pop-up—91K7FS3, in the example image below).

  1. Your local IT support team will provide you a unique code to enter for PIN 2. Enter that code and click “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

  1. You now will be able to perform the action. If you are the primary user of the computer or perform the action on a shared computer, please contact your local IT support team and discuss being set as an authorized user or flagging the computer as a shared computer.

FAQs

I can’t find the Admin By Request icon in my task tray.

Initially, ABR is limited to units and computers that previously had an EPM solution. Please open a ticket with your local IT support team, so they can confirm if your computer is eligible, and if so, why the icon is missing.

I see the Admin By Request icon in my task tray but “run as admin/start an admin session” aren’t working.

Some units may configure ABR differently, so please open a ticket with your local IT support team.

I’m trying to use Admin By Request to uninstall an application, but it’s not working.

To uninstall an application, it is best to start an admin session or use the additional “Uninstall Program” tool, detailed here [link to “Additional Tools” section]. If you still encounter issues, please open a ticket with your local IT support team.
