TAMUDirect - General Use

General information

What is TAMUDirect?

TAMUDirect is a service provided by Texas A&M Technology Services that automates the membership population of Texas A&M Google Groups. Lists are updated automatically every night.

What type of TAMUDirect lists are there?

There are two general types of TAMUDirect lists: Course lists and Organization lists.

Course lists

A course list is a mailing list created for one or more course sections to allow instructors to communicate to their classes. These can be set up individually for each course section, multiple sections can be combined into one common mailing list, or a combination of the two. Only an instructor of record for the section can create a course list for that section. Membership for course lists is based on enrollment data in Compass.

Organization lists

Organization lists are used by colleges, departments, or divisions to automate mailing list inclusion for staff, faculty, and student lists or combinations thereof. Common examples are:

  • A series of lists for each classification of students within a major (freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior, etc.).
  • Lists to all major or minor students within a department.
  • A list of all staff within a college.
  • A list for all faculty, staff, and students within a college.

Creating a course mailing list

An instructor of record can create a TAMUDirect list for any section they are listed as an IOR.

  1. Go to https://tamudirect.tamu.edu.
  2. Click on Log In or Get Started. Authenticate with your NetID and password if necessary.
  3. Click the Create a List button in the upper left corner of the page.
  4. Choose the semester the specific section is part of. You may have the same section number offered during multiple semesters.
  5. Select the course section you want to create a list for. If you do not see the course initially, try scrolling the course list. Some web browsers do not display the scroll bar for that section.
    1. Selecting only one course section will create a mailing list for that specific section.
    2. Selecting multiple course sections will create a single mailing list made up of all of the selected sections.
  6. After selecting the course, you may provide an alternate name for the course.
  7. Click Create at the bottom of the page to create the list.

Creating an organization list

Organization lists must be created by Technology Services personnel. To request the creation of TAMUDirect organization lists, email helpdesk@tamu.edu. A TAMUDirect administrator will contact you to go over the list to ensure the list's membership matches the intended audience of the list.

Adding additional email addresses to a list

To add another email address to a TAMUDirect list, such as a boutique address such as NetID@department.tamu.edu:

  1. Go to https://tamudirect.tamu.edu.
  2. Click Edit to the right of the list you need to add the address to.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to Add Member.
  4. Enter the name and email address you need to add.
  5. Click Can Moderate if the address needs to be a moderator of the list with the ability to send (such as a TA).
  6. Click Add Member.

Sending email to a list

You can send email to a TAMUDirect list using your preferred email client. Simply paste the email address of the list into the To: field of a new email.
