Viewing Email Headers

Introduction

The following documentation will help you set up viewing for email headers in:

  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Gmail
  • Mac Mail
  • Outlook Web App (OWA)
  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Yahoo! Mail
  • Pegasus Mail Clients

  
Microsoft Outlook

For Outlook Office 365, 2016, 2013, or 2010

  1. Double click on the message so that it pops out into its own window.
  2. Click File.

     
  3. Click Properties.

     
  4. The Internet Headers are displayed in a box near the bottom of the Properties window.

For Outlook 2007:

  1. Right-click on the email in question.
  2. Click Message Options at the bottom of the popup menu.

     
  3. The headers are in the Internet Headers section.

Gmail

  1. Log into Gmail or Texas A&M Gmail.
  2. Open the email you would like to view headers for.
  3. At the top of the message pane, click on the three dots next to the reply arrow.

     
  4. Click Show Original.

Mac Mail

  1. Select the message.
  2. Click View.
  3. Click Message.
  4. Click All Headers.

     

You can also press Command + Shift + H

  
Outlook Web App (OWA)

  1. Select the email you want to view headers for.
  2. On the upper right side of the page, click the down arrow to the right of the Reply button.
  3. Click View message details.

   
Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Double click the email you want to view the headers on.
  2. Click View.
  3. Click Message Source.

Depending on your version of Mozilla Thunderbird, this video may help you.

   
Yahoo! Mail

  1. Once you are logged in, click on the message you wish to view the header on.
  2. At the top of the message, click the 3 dots next to Spam.

     
  3. Click View raw message.

   
Pegasus Mail Clients

  1. Right click on the message.
  2. Select Message Headers... from the menu.
